Photographing dogs is kind of new to me, well… I do take a ton of pictures of my sweet Chaco… What I mean is that I have never really photographed another dog. When I got the call from Melissa to take some pictures of Savannah, I was actually really excited. Melissa got married last July (http://www.kristiodom.com/blog/?p=596) and we just had so much fun at her wedding, I was really excited to hang out with her again.

I think my favorite things about Melissa is that she is sweet as can be and up for absolutly anything. While running around a new park, Savannah really wanted to just run around and check things out. I wanted more shots of the two interacting, so I asked Melissa, can I smear peanut butter on your face. Without even thinking about it, she replied, sure thing. It did the trick and Savannah did not stop licking her for the rest of the shoot. Thank you again Thu for hanging out with us in the rain to photograph Melissa and her furry critter!

Aiden

During my last trip down to Atlanta, not only did I have an amazing time, but I got to meet little Aiden. Anastasia is one of my closest friends in the world. A year ago, I was so happy to be by her side as she married Rick, one of the most entertaining people in the world (and an amazing guy as well). Have a look at the blog here, http://www.kristiodom.com/blog/?p=194. It was kind of unreal to see that those two had this perfect little baby.

I sat in the den with Anastasia and Rick, both very sleep deprived. I remember thinking that I had never seen someone so drained but yet so full at the same time. When I say full, I mean they both had so much love and excitement that underneath their drooping eyelids, their eyes where so full of life. It makes me better understand the term “they were glowing”. So congratulations to my good friends Anastasia and Rick, I can’t wait for all the memories to come with your newest family member.

Cen & Tim
Meadowlark, Virginia
Feb 28th, 2010

I remember getting a call from Cen at the end of January asking about wedding photography. I asked my standard questions about location and date and Cen’s response was basically I don’t know when or where we are getting married yet, we want to get married in about a month. With weddings usually being months sometimes well over a year of planning and prep (and a little craziness) I am not used to getting calls like this, and to be honest it was a big breath of fresh air. Cen and Tim where truly in love and ready to get married.

Cen and Tim got married just about a month after they called me at one of my favorite venues, Meadowlark, with some of their closest family and friends. We cruised around DC in a classic Rolls Royce stopping at the monuments, then ran around Meadowlark to take a few more pictures. The whole day was so drama free and full of laughs, smiles and a ton of tears. Cen was so happy that tears where streaming during the ceremony falling all the way to the ceremony floor. It was beautiful. A big thanks to Astrid for her awesome pictures and great company. We had an amazing time and felt like old friends! What a great wedding!

My Favorites from Africa!

Anyone who knows me, knows of my love for Africa. I got married there and have traveled back and forth now to nine different African countries in the last 4 years. I was so excited to get a call to do an assignment in Kenya! The assignment: Photograph the on-ground efforts of the Global Peace Festival and the Global Peace Service Alliance in Kenya. The non-profits have a very inspirational purpose, to help inspire people to believe that they can make a difference in Kenya future and to help spread the message that we are all one family under God. I will be getting into this a lot more in a future blog post on the project, but for now, I show you some nature pictures I shot along the way.

I added on to my trip a week in Uganda to visit friends and spend some time Gorilla Trekking. I have always dreamed of seeing Gorillas in the wild. The Mountain Gorilla is very endangered having only around 720 left in the world, half of that population is in Bwindi National Park in Uganda. It took around 2 and a half hours of uphill, no path, mountain hiking to find the family. Gotta love hearing the following from guides before a hike “watch out for the Black Mambas and the hissing Cobras” as I had a quick Kill Bill flash back. Luckly no snakes, just lots of non-human primates. The family we found had 2 silverbacks amongst it’s 18 members. The babies played feet from us, beating their chests and playing on some vines. After 25 minutes of running around and playing they all decided they wanted different food and ran, and we ran after then. It was an amazing experience. Below are a few of my favorite images from my very short amount of time I spent with them.

I also did a Chimp hike while in Uganda. The Chimpanzees where crazy active during the hike and despite numerous efforts they where not able to pee or poop on any of us (our guide was not so lucky).

I also want to give a huge thanks to my wonderful friends Andy and Megan for inviting me to stay in their beautiful Ugandan house for my last few days in Africa. You guys are awesome and I had a great time hanging out over Mad Men and Chinese food. It was just what I needed after 10 days of photojournalism in Kenya, then a week trekking in Uganda. Thank you so much!!!

So I am going to leave you guys with a few of my favorite images from my crazy adventures. I hope you like!

The DNA for Gorillas are almost 99% identical to humans, check out the finger prints.
